If Your Getting Spam E-Mails You Might Have A Security Problem

Posted on May 31, 2008

Why Do I Get Spam E-Mail?

You know what I’m talking about those annoying emails that you get from people
you have never heard of, that try to sell you stuff you don’t need. If everybody
hates spam, why do we get it ? Well not everybody hates spam the fact is many
people buy the things they see in spam emails.

Spamming is illegal, and the authorities are getting better at catching spammers.
Many times, spamming is done by professional crime organizations.
Spamming is big business, and generates millions of dollars each year. In order
to get around authorities, spammers will rent zombie networks out to do their
spamming for them.

Are you on a zombie network? A zombie network is simply a network of computers
that have all been hijacked and can be controlled remotely. If you are on a zombie
network your computer can be used against you to infect other friends, families or
customers on your mailing list. A spammer can use that network to send all their
spam emails for them, so that authorities cannot trace the true source of the spam.
It’s like using someone else to do the dirty work. The spammer walks away clean,
and the computer owner can actually be held accountable for what is done with their
computer.

There have been cases where innocent people have been convicted of having illegal
child pornography hidden on their computer without even knowing about it! Porn, like
spam, is a big business, and zombie networks can just as easily be used to hide
pornographic images as it can be used to send out spam emails.

Spam emails can also be a symptom of a much bigger problem. If you have spyware
or other malware on your computer, the spammer can actually look over your
Internet surfing habits, and can target spam to you based on that information.
Privacy is a big issue, and if you are using an inferior source of Internet
protection, your spam could very well be a sign of a much larger problem.

Obviously, there is a lot of dangers involved with using the Internet. However,
it doesn’t have to be that way. We live in a day and age of uncertainty. If you are
completely protected from all forms of ID theft, hacking, viruses, spyware, and
phishing it just makes life easier. More importantly, you will breathe easier knowing
that you are protected. Don’t let a hacker ruin your good name and cause you undo harm.

Halloween Bash - Great Ideas For Your Next Party

Posted on May 31, 2008

Growing up, my birthday was 1 week before Halloween. For several years, my mother went crazy hosting Halloween parties my friends as well as my brother and sister’s. So, I had to carry on the tradition.

I started this adventure in Sept 2006. Yes, it was over a month away, but I wanted to make sure I had enough time and balanced the expenses though several paychecks. Since the ages ranged from 1-9 years i wanted to do something creepy but not so terrifying it would give the kids nightmares. Each room (and outside) had a special theme. Here’s how we did it:

The Decorations

Haunted House: double sided tape and black plastic. Go to the $1.00 store and find as many lawn bags as possible. Cut the ends and open them up. Tape them to the walls, ceiling and floors. Use a black light in the hall, and put bubble wrap under the black plastic for that crunching effect. Double sided tape works great because you can really cover the edges without the tape showing.

I wanted the fog effect, but I was worried the kids would either play with the fog machine or trip over buckets of water and dry ice. I was also on a budget. So I took 2 corner heavy duty planters and screwed them up at the top of the corners. Just before the kids went into the haunted house, I put a small piece of dry ice and filled it full of hot water. It was a great effect because the fog looked like it was falling down the walls.

Throughout the hallway, I took rubber bats (another $1.00 store find) and stuck them with a needle and black thread so they would hang. Since I wanted some bats lower than others for the kids to walk though, I needed to find a way to hang them without thumb tacks. So double sided tape again!! That way if they fell out, no one would get hurt. You could also use the same tactic with plastic spiders, ghosts or any other decoration.

Buggy Bathroom

This one was great. My daughter collects plastic animals, so it was easy for us. I asked her to collect all the “creepy animals” in her room. (snakes, bugs, spiders etc) With more double sided tape, we just stuck them all over the walls. For heavier animals, I used heavy duty double sided tape made for pictures. Just be careful, because it can pull off the paint on your walls when you remove them. A good way to avoid that would be to stick the bugs on pieces of plywood and then hang the pieces up on the walls with a picture frame hanger.

For effect, we put spider webs all over the ceiling and left the tub dripping. I put another corner planter filled with dry ice for fog and used battery operated candles to make it kid friendly. Never use real candles in a haunted house!! You don’t want costumes catching on fire.

The kids thought it was great… but be prepared! You will need another bathroom for the kids that are too scared.

Enchanted Forest

We couldn’t figure out how make my daughter’s room scary. She first wanted to have a man eating jungle, but I had no idea how to pull that off. So after lots of research, I decided to create a MAN EATING TREE out of paper mache.

To complete the room, we used fake ivy, trees, dried spanish moss and whatever else we could find that looked like a plant. I hung the decorations up with thumb tacks, trailing down the walls and on the celing. I also used dark green spooky fabric you can find during Halloween time ($1.00 store find).

I also added a fake witch. The witch was made by taking a long black dress of my daughters, stockings and long boots I had in my closet. We stuffed it filled with newspaper to give it a body shape. I added a head by using a green balloon, mask, wig and a old witch costume hat from last year’s costume. I had a difficult time making sure the head was straight, but I taped it to the back of the chair. Ironically, during the party, the head “fell off” and scared the big kids!

I wanted to add a “dead body” in her bed by stuffing men’s clothing and using a bit of red paint where the head would be on the newspaper. I figured the little kids wouldn’t be in her room, so it was OK to add more gore. Unfortunately, we ran out of time.

We added a table and added a witches kitchen. I used a small cauldronn with dry ice, fake rats, snakes and a brain. I wanted to create “magic potion” by using yellow hi-lighter ink (soak it in water) and it glows under a black light. Once again, I ran out of time, so we just used food coloring and water in jars with labels.

Ghost Room:

My son was only 2 and 1/2 at the time. So I wanted to find something fun for his room. With the magic of wire hangers, white plastic bags, tape and a pen I created a circle of ghosts dancing around a fire. Our GHOSTIES were cute but not too scary for the little ones.

Animal Graveyard

Since there were little kids, I didn’t want to be too gruesome. I thought a human graveyard might be over the top, but what about a animal graveyard??

I made HEADSTONES, picked up a sack of dirt and made the kids find old stuffed animals I could toss once the party was over. We wrapped a toad in toilet paper for a mummy, dug a hole and buried an animal except for his arm, used the rabbit ears off a rabbit headband costume so the ears would just stick out of the ground and cut holes in a teddy bear and pulled some stuffing out to make him into a zombie. On the gravestones, we wrote very silly epithets.

  • “Poor Ms Snake, made a big mistake, Greeted the Gardener with a long rake”
  • “Here lies Hoppy. One day he went floppy”
  • “Ode to the Toad, that was too slow on the road”
  • “Mr Bear - He got a fish-bone in his throat, which made him sing an angel’s note”
  • “Melinda the Cat. Was just too fat. Drank water from a pool but fell and went splat”

The Games Since the haunted house was such a big hit, I did not plan many games. Mummy Wrap

Ages: All ages What you need: toilet paper

Preparation: None

How to play: Break out into pairs of two. One person is the wrapper and the other person is the mummy. Have 2 parents be the judges. Whoever is the best mummy wins!

Find the monster

Ages: 3 and under

What you need: helium white balloons and 1 colored balloon, pens, string, boxes, paper

Preparation:Gather the amount of boxes you need for the number of little kids. Write large numbers (I used a printer) and tape the papered numbers on each box. In each white balloon make them into ghosts by creating the eyes and mouth. On the colored balloon draw a monster face. Put the balloons in each box once they are filled with helium. Create number slips corresponding to each box. (Note: you can use streamers for the ghosts, but I found it weighted the balloons too much and they didn’t float. Also wait until the party is close to starting so the balloons do not deflate)

How to play: Give each child a number. All at once, have them open the boxes. The object is to have the ghosts float to the top and whoever has the monster wins.

Scavenger Hunt

Ages: All ages.

(Warning: little kids maybe knocked over by big kids. Take turns by age group)

What you need:Halloween items for them to find (spiders, eyeballs, etc)

Preparation: Strategically place Halloween items around the house. This worked great for the haunted house because the objects blended in with the decorations. Create a list (or several lists) for the kids to use during the hunt.

How to play: Elect a parent to be the “home base” for each team. The parent can also assist in counting. Whoever has the most items wins.

Costume Contest

Ages: All ages.

What you need: 3 jars and with a pad of paper and a pen

Preparation: Place an area where people can “vote”.

How to play: During the party, direct people to the table to vote for the costume contest. At the end of the party, announce the winners and hand out prizes.

The Food

I just wanted spooky snacks for the kids. I created little signs for each platter.

  • Fingers and Toes - little smokies or hot dogs, barbecue sauce in a crock pot
  • Buggy Buffet - hodge-podge of food turned into bugs
  • Kitty Littler Cake - cake in a litter pan with fake candy poop.
  • Worms in dirt- gummy worms in a actual flower pot of chocolate pudding
  • Bat Wings - Hot wings
  • Boogers on a stick - Pretzles dipped in green frosting
  • Blood Punch - red punch with floating ice hands
  • Monster hands - popcorn, gloves and candy corn
  • Witches Skin - meat and cheese platter
  • In the end, the hard work paid off. The kids had a great time, so did the parents. I was happy to know I carried on the tradition. I only hope my daughter will do the same when she is a mom.

Is Your PC Part of a Zombie Army Unit Without You Knowing It?

    Posted on May 31, 2008

Virus authors are choosing not to create global epidemics–infections of the type caused by Melissa or Blaster–because that distracts them from their core business of creating and selling zombie networks, according to antivirus experts.

Speaking at the AusCERT conference in Australia’s Gold Coast, Eugene Kaspersky, founder of Kaspersky Labs, said that the influence of organized crime on “Do I need a million computers to send spam? No. To do a DDoS attack, 5,000 or 10,000 PCs is more than enough. That is why virus writers and hackers have changed their tactics of infection–they don’t need a global epidemic,” said Kaspersky.

Zombie networks are groups of computers that have been infected by malware that allows the author to control the infected PC and use it to send spam or launch DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. the malicious software industry has led to a change of tactics. Instead of trying to create viruses and worms that infect as many computers as possible, authors of malicious software are instead trying to infect 5,000 or 10,000 computers at a time to create personalized zombie armies.

According to Kaspersky, organized criminals are advertising zombie computers for rent on underground newsgroups and Web pages. When they receive an order for a certain-size army, they set about trying to infect computers using infected e-mail attachments or socially engineered spam with links to malicious Web pages. As soon as they infect enough computers to fulfill the order, they stop using that particular piece of malicious software.

“Say the virus author needs 5,000 infected computers. They put the Trojan on a Web page and wait for 5,000 machines to be infected, then they remove the Trojan because that is enough,” Kaspersky explained. “When they get a new request for another zombie network, they release a new Trojan. They are able to control the number of infected computers.”

Adam Biviano, senior systems engineer at antivirus company Trend Micro, agrees. He said that by infecting a relatively small number of computers, the malicious software has a better chance of flying “under the radar” and not being spotted by antivirus companies.

“It makes sense to have a discreet number of PCs under your control and be able to sell that on,” said Biviano, adding, “With 5,000 PCs under your control–none of which are being destroyed or showing actual qualifiable damage as a result–you will fit under the radar, probably make some money and you probably won’t get arrested.”

Kaspersky said that to fight this new tactic, antivirus companies have to be more thorough, scouring Web pages and e-mail attachments for new and obscure pieces of malicious software to ensure as few Trojans as possible escape.

“Before releasing the new infected code, (virus writers) test it using antivirus scanners and they don’t release the new Trojan or worm if it is detected. I believe that if only 1,000 machines are infected, antivirus companies will never receive the infected file. That is why antivirus companies have to collect data reactively and get samples as quickly as possible,” said Kaspersky.

Vincent Gullotto, vice president of McAfee AVERT (Anti-virus Emergency Response Team), said that antivirus companies are responding to the new threat by proactively seeking out new forms of malicious software.

“It is standard for us, Kaspersky, Symantec and some of the other prominent antivirus companies to scour the Web in many different ways. We go out looking for (malicious software) with a very aggressive search and we do passive searches, where we have machines that are just sitting around waiting to get attacked. When we see a machine getting attacked, we grab a sample rather quickly so we can add it to our database,” said Gullotto.

For more information on virus protection search using keywords “virus protection” in your web browser.

Following In The Footsteps of Giants

    Posted on May 31, 2008

This week, a beloved figure in Toronto, a business mogul, philanthropist, and a forward thinker who changed the landscape of retail business, the urban core, and the entertainment and culture in Canadas largest city, died at the age of 92.

Ed Mirvish leaves a legacy that is the footstep of a giant. A legacy we can all be proud of because Mr. Mirvish not only achieved great success and prosperity, innovated positive change, infused Toronto with economic, social and cultural vitality; he also retained that powerful spark of humility, humanity, and a love for his fellow man that is clearly the footstep of a giant.

Maybe it is time for those of us who have achieved the prosperity that creates financial freedom, and those who have not, to ask ourselves what kind of foot print we want to leave behind.
The footprint of a giant is not measured by the size of his bank account, nor by the trophies, awards or material accoutrements of success. The footprint of a giant is measured by his or her ability to leave a legacy that continues to touch the hearts and minds of others.

A legacy that speaks of servant leadership, a legacy that reflects the ability to make a positive difference in the world in which we live, and in the lives of the people we lead, love and serve. Building the footprint of a giant is the work of a life time, it cannot be built solely upon our unprecedented access to knowledge, information, technology, or the skills and competencies we have developed. The footprint of a giant is born of the faith, hope, courage, humility and relentless moral strength and timeless values that create the passionate purpose, desire and ability to make a positive different in the lives of others.

Faith gives one the spiritual power that guides our best thoughts and actions. Hope allows us to embrace gratitude and to build resiliency. Courage gives us the ability to live in alignment with our highest values. Humility allows us to realize that life is a gift, and that minimizing the human dignity or potential of another human being does not give us power, rather it makes us powerless to realize the true purpose of our creed.

In a world of increasing chaos, discord, violence and upheaval it is the men and women from the C suite to the warehouse, from the most revered professions to the humblest of occupations who can decide that they want to make their foot print, the foot print of a giant, or to support the giants among us. Both are equally important, both are critical.

We cannot all become the change we seek, but we can be inspired and motivated by the footprints of giants like Ed Mirvish. We can be inspired to help build and sustain the footprints of the visible and less visible giants whose faith, courage, hope, humility, leadership can help us embrace an evolution of self that will take us past what is, so that we can create what can be in our lives, our communities, our workplaces, our society and our world.

Described by clients as a coach, confidant, sounding board, crisis manager and success guide, Irene Becker is the Chief Success Officer of Just Coach It, a professional coaching firm dedicated to helping smart, fast, forward thinkers build the new currency of success in their lives, their leadership and their work. Three Easy Ways Moms Can Lose Weight

    Posted on May 31, 2008

I know you usually do not put the words “easy” and “lose weight” together. You are probably thinking that cannot be possible or it is some kind of to good to be true gimmick. But read on, as there are 3 easy lifestyle changes that can help you lose the baby fat or get to the weight goal you desire.

I am sure you have been programmed to believe that you have to spend hour after hour sweating away your life at the gym. Then there is all of the bland and yucky so called food that you have to eat or you cannot eat anything at all, right? Could there be a way to drop a couple of dress sizes without all of the drastic measures? By making some small behavioral changes, you can lose those unwanted inches and pounds. Here are 3 easy lifestyle changes that will give you back the look you have long desired.

    1. Stop Eating Out So Much. When you were growing up do you remember what the plates looked like? They were not Supersized or overly large. Now look at the plates at your favorite restaurant. They are huge in comparison. No wonder you have gained weight. It is a conspiracy of the restaurant chains. Look at the studies that have been conducted over the years regarding eating out. The studies show that if you eat out - you overeat… You know you want to get your money’s worth and how can you control how much you eat when you have such large plates? Remember your mom always told you to clean your plate and, of course, the plates were small then. So that mentality still exists with you when you eat out on the Supersized plates.

When you eat out you eat too much, so take a break from eating out for the next six weeks and see how your clothes fit then. You might even save enough money to buy a couple of new SMALLER outfits (you know the tight sexy jeans).

    2. How About Eating Smaller Portions? I know you think you cannot have the types of food you love. Well that is not true. You just have to eat smaller amounts of the foods that can cause weight gain. Do not avoid the foods that you love altogether because then you will cheat and eat large amounts of those foods when you do get the chance. By using smaller plates, you will be able to control the amounts of foods you love to eat. This way you will not be deprived of what you want but you will just eat a smaller amount which will satisfy your desires and cravings. Do not fall back into the mentality your mom taught you “You must clean your plate”. You do not have to. I give you permission. Learn to eat slower and take your time so you enjoy your food. You will get full quicker and when you are full QUIT EATING no matter how much is left on your plate. Keep in mind as you eat “Those Skinny, Tight Jeans” that you are going to fit in.

    3. Make Better Food Choices. I said you could enjoy the foods you love in moderation but start to cut out some of the bad foods. The sugary sweets, candies, cookies, sodas, chips and the fatting foods. I am not saying never to eat these foods; I am saying they are okay once in a while. It is amazing how much you can spice a bottle of water up now with the powders you can mix in. Look for the ones with no sugar, no hydrogenated oils and sweetened with Splenda.

When you shop in the grocery store, shop around the outside perimeter of the store first where the healthier foods are. All of the junk foods are in the inside aisles, so do not spend much time there. When you are at work or play, keep healthy snacks in reach and do not go to the vending machines. Make good choices with the meals that are not really important such as snacks or a quick lunch. That way when you do have an important meal that you must go out for, it will not affect you as much. If your life (keep the smaller, tight jeans in mind) will not improve with what you are getting ready to eat (should I eat the Double Cheeseburger or the Chicken Salad) DO NOT DO IT! Again sexy jeans or a bigger belt size? Which do you really want and is the bad food worth it? Learn to read the labels of what you eat and cut out all the sugar you can. Comparison shop for each item to see what choice is the best choice. You can have bread, etc. but which one has the most fiber and the lowest amount of sugar? Look at the labels. This will help you make better choices.

These 3 steps can help you keep on track and lose the weight. These are not magical or mystical. They are common sense but usually overlooked steps to weight loss.

How Many Calories do I Need to Eat to Lose Weight?

    Posted on May 31, 2008

One of the very first questions all new dieters want to know is how many calories they are allowed to eat to meet their weight loss goals. And of course, this makes total sense, right? We have all been conditioned (and to a large degree it is true) to draw a straight line between our caloric intake and our expected weight gain or loss. Now, obviously there is a fair amount more to the equation than this! While a calorie, might be a calorie. there are other variables that factor into the equation in very real and powerful ways, most notably and universally agreed upon: Your activity level!

Remember, one pound of weight loss is created by a deficit of roughly 3,500 calories.

This is going to be the difference between the caloric input and output level, if you burn 3,500 extra calories in a day (you probably won’t!) and all other things remain equal, guess what? You’ll be one pound lighter for the effort. Again, this is simply just an illustrative example…there are many unique permutations and plans which account for the types of calories differently…but most hard core science will tell you, at the end of the day - it’s just about the math. Calories in, vs. calories out as a measure of energy.

So if you want to be your own dietary chemist and figure out exactly how many calories you need to consume to lose weight, you simply need to “do the digits!” And when you are done, extrapolate the numbers out over the period of time you are planning on dieting, and you should have a rough allocation of your daily calorie intake. This is not the “sexy” way of dieting, of course…but it is the one the guys with the lab coats would have you follow! And while not the most exciting way to get started, it will provide the foundational guideline for many of you to set your initial targets - then you’ll come and talk to us!

Read On to Discover the 6 Biggest Lies About Weight Loss…..and how to avoid them like the plague!

Tips for Getting Started With Homeschooling

    Posted on May 31, 2008

So you’re considering homeschooling? Where do you start?

As with everything in life, those who prepare are more apt to succeed. This is true for homeschooling too. The majority of the structure and organization of the homeschool is up to you. Planning ahead will reduce pitfalls and improve the effectiveness of your homeschool.

There are many ways of creating your plan but there are some basics you should address. Here are guidelines to help you get started with your homeschooling preparation.

First and most important, get a commitment from everyone in the household who will affect or be affected by the homeschool. Make sure they understand that they are going to contribute to the success of the homeschool.

Gather information and resources. You can get valuable information by visiting homeschooling web sites, signing up for free online newsletters, visiting homeschooling message board and join homeschooling chats and email lists. Find homeschooling events calendars online and attend homeschooling conferences. Subscribe to homeschooling magazines. Visit a book store or go to your local library.

Become familiar with homeschooling laws in your state. It is usually simple to satisfy the laws. There are many websites that provide this information. The local public school district office and the public library can also help you in this area.

Join a homeschooling support group in your area. It is very important to exchange ideas in a group. This can be a group of homeschooling friends or families associated with your curriculum. You can also find regional homeschooling support groups and state level homeschooling associations. Other homeschoolers can offer a wealth of information on a variety of subjects. They can help with many aspects of homeschooling, i.e. choosing curriculum, record keeping, meeting the state laws, and group activities. Some have been homeschooling for a long time and have solutions to difficulties you might encounter. You too can contribute by bringing new and fresh ideas. Even if you want to keep your autonomy, find a group that fits your needs. These groups can streamline your homeschooling and prevent common pitfalls.

Choose your curriculum. You can choose a complete program or create one yourself. It can new, used, shared or borrowed. It can be expensive or cost nothing. This is where a homeschooling network is valuable. Get input from other homeschoolers. See what has worked them and what fits for you. Takes cues from your children. Use the Internet or go to the library to research your options.

Set up a record keeping system. There are many different styles of record keeping. You can develop your own style of record keeping. Your record keeping can be as simple as a daily journal or as complicated as keeping track of daily schedules, and setting short- and long-term goals. Also, your curriculum may determine how you keep records. Determine what final result you want. Check out local colleges, trade schools universities and see what they require. Find out what record keeping is required by law. Consult your support group and find what has worked for them.

Planning ahead both short- and long-term goals will go a long way towards your homeschooling success.

How to Win the War on Terror

    Posted on May 31, 2008

Many people say we can never win the war on terror and the international terrorists will just continue to blow up and kill innocent women and children wherever they feel like. They will continue to kidnap people and cut off their heads simply for a video opportunity for the Internet or Al Jazeera television.

Since we cannot win the war on terror let’s just change the name. We are good that we change the name of everything. The United States Senate and the United States Congress often change the names on bills and new laws just so they sound cool and we can make an acronym out of them.

We may as well claim victory on the war on terror and call these international terrorists organizations such as; Hamas, Hezbollah and Al Qaeda; nuisances. Then we can have the War on Nuisances.

We should be able to rid the world of nuisances such as ice cream trucks, which drive through the neighborhood playing crappy music. We can chase them through the neighborhood with shovels and rakes. And tell them to play at XM Radio on the 80s station. Otherwise they are not allowed.

It makes sense to have a war on nuisances because so many things annoy us. Just think of all the fun we can have and all the taxpayers money we can save. That’s how to win the war on terror, simply change the name and announce victory. Consider this in 2006.
