Appalled by the Low Ethical Standards in Business?
Posted on May 30, 2008
Are you frustrated and appalled at the low ethical standards you see in business and in corporations these days, perhaps even the one you work in. Well, one should not be too surprised at the low ethical standards, as we see kids cheating on their tests, reports and research papers. We see bureaucrats mis-abusing government credit cards and we see our politicians taking bribes. We see priests in churches molesting kids. We see our athletes cheating with steroids as well.
Fortunately, I can assure you that businesses are much more ethical in nature than the rest, but they are also made up of people, humans are the real problem. How ethical are you, let's look into your mirror for a moment and let's talk about ethics. Can I recommend a book too you on the subject?
"The Power of Ethical Management - Integrity Pays! You Don't Have to Cheat to Win" by Kenneth Blanchard and Norman Vincent Peale - 1988. This book suggests a look into the ethical dilemma, taking an personal ethics check, company ethics check and finding balance. It puts forth ethical questions to ask and a Mission Statement audit of ethical principles. I would recommend that everyone read this work and then take some time to reflect the reality of their business actions.
The thought that good guys finish last, is not always the case, it often depends on where you consider the finish line of the race. Short-term gain and jeopardizing ethics in the process can also spell disaster. This book is a quick read, not as fast as Kenneth Blanchard's famous "One-Minute Manager" but close.
Please lead by example, do the right thing, yes of course you must make a profit that goes without question, but you need to be ethical, yes it is a little harder in the beginning and takes a little more strategic thought, but it can be done. Do not get lazy, pull your weight and do the right thing, why? Because it is the right thing to do - Think on this.
