Birthday Parties for Kids
Posted on June 6, 2008
On birthday party day, kids can be overwhelmed by presents and by people visiting. Sometimes they can act out and ruin things, ultimately making you feel bad that you went to all the trouble. Not to mention family can put a lot of pressure on a day that is meant to honour your child just for showing up in the world. This article is made with some tips to make your child's special day just that.
For present opening, try doing your presents and sibling presents in the morning. Leave enough time for him or her to play with the toys and their siblings. This can alleviate jealousy and outbursts. Try to give the impression to your child that though exciting things will be happening later that at the moment, she or he is just expected to play and enjoy waking up. This kind of casual expectation immediately puts the birthday girl or boy into the right frame of mind.
Consider doing a family get together on your child's special day, limiting it to either a barbecue or a lunchtime type of thing. Of course, family can stay a little bit longer than a regular birthday party but now would not be the time to include friends and neighbors. Instead, leave that to another week.
What we always do now, having learned our lessons many times over is to have a special day on the birthday for that child and her or his family.
We then arrange for something special to happen on that day...either going to an indoor play place or to the park where family can join in with their kids.
But then, we also have a big party with friends and siblings of the child on a different weekend.
Many children are asked to choose what they want. They can either have cousins and aunts and uncles or friends. Truthfully, most children would choose friends over family and this would leave you with the awkward task of explaining it to family. So instead, don't offer this kind of choice. Simply make sure that there are two opportunities for your child to feel special.
If cost is a factor, consider having a family 'BYOM' party. These Bring Your Own Meat parties can defray the cost of buying food for everybody. You could also do a bring your own potluck type of event. At a family party where there are young kids, forget the entertainment. Just being together makes all kinds of opportunities to play.
For the friend event, consider buying a package for your child's birthday party for the other weekend that would include food and play for a number of friends. This takes away most stress. If you have to provide loot bags to this event, it gives your child a chance to go to a dollar store and pack up all the loot bags in a paced fashion.
We cannot run our children ragged for their birthdays or they will act out. And we can't leave out family in favor of friends? Overall, the main tip here is to slow it down, split things into two events and let your child have a birthday week from one weekend to the other all to his or herself.
