Home Schooling and the Technology Future

Fortunately thanks to technology home schooling is becoming easier and easier for those parents in United States of America who have chosen to take their children out of public schools and to start teaching them at home. Additionally home schooling associations and groups are getting better and better and bigger and bigger and this provides them with economies of scale in order to secure the technological assets they will need to teach their children better.
If you consider high-speed Internet, videoconferencing, online video and all the online encyclopedias, white papers and research available you can see you just how great it is and how much easier it is to teach a child at home now than it was 10 years ago. Have you consider home schooling your child? If you have been you might be glad to learn of all the technological advances and all the different programs available online, as well as all the consultants and advisers who can help you all via the Internet.

The Old School House

Not having been home-schooled myself, I can not say yea or nay (with experience) about what its advantages and disadvantages are. What I do know is that two families I grew up with were home-schooled, and they seemed to get their work done faster and were more fluent with the subjects of their classes then I was. And I also know that anyone can learn a new skill. It does not require a four year degree to learn how to become a teacher. It sure helps, but it is not the end all, be all.
The Old School House Magazine can help parents who wish to home-school their children for whatever reason, and not fall into the predictable pitfalls their predecessors got stumped on. The fact that field trips are dealt with, and ideas are listed for the parent/teacher, is great news in of itself. The family I knew and grew up with had no field trips, and their schooling was extremely BORING, even though they had great marks.
My friend used to complain that he wanted to come to public school where it was fun. He was right. It was fun, but it was also distracting. Most of what students paid attention to, was looking good in front of everyone else in the latest fashion and cultural trends.
If Home Schooling continues to progress, it may display the best of both worlds by going out into the \”real world\” like public schools do, and also giving the individual attention that each student needs, to succeed.

When Your Homeschooler Hits College Age

When you first decide to homeschool your child, it can be overwhelming. All sorts of questions abound: what should we study; how; am I qualified? After youve gotten yourself into a routine, though, many of those uncertainties seem to fade away as you and your child discover the world together. However, after youve been at it for a few years, youre bound to notice that your child is reaching the age where people start asking about college.
That opens up a whole new can of worms for a homeschooler, and a whole new set of questions pop up. Will my homeschooler get into a good college? Will admissions officers look negatively on the homeschooling experience? Will my child fit in with the other students who are coming from a traditional school environment? The list is practically endless!
However, as most homeschooling parents are pleasantly surprised to discover, homeschooling doesnt work against your child when it comes time for college. In fact, many of the nations top schools seek out homeschooled students because of their diverse learning experiences and broad knowledge base! The admissions process may be a little different for homeschoolers, who may or may not have completed many of the standardized tests that are offered in traditional school settings.
Many of the top schools take the time to interview every student they are considering for acceptance. An interview is the best place for the homeschooler to shine. Its a chance to show all the knowledge and skills that are gained from homeschooling and its also the best place to show the independent thinking and maturity that often results from staying out of the traditional school setting. Since homeschoolers tend to be surrounded by adults more than children, they often demonstrate an ability to relate to the college environment more easily than a traditional student who has been indoctrinated in deference to authority and obedience to random rules designed to handle the herd.
The fact is, the college life is a lot different from a high school atmosphere. Most courses a student will take throughout their postsecondary education require few prerequisites that dont come directly from the college experience. A high school course in history is quite different from one in university: high school courses are designed to teach facts and basic skills, while a college course is designed to teach theories and independent thought.
The one aspect of the college admissions process that your homeschool student may miss out on is some of the scholarship opportunities. Many of the sports or club scholarships require participation in a high school environment. However, there are many scholarships available that arent tied to these activities, or will accept participation in community teams or clubs as equivalent. Make sure that you put the same effort into researching your college applications that you do into creating your homeschool experience.

Abstract is not just for art. Abstract means that something is a concept, an idea, something we thought of, something we believe in or know to be a fact, but is not something that can be seen. The results may be seeable, but not the fact itself. Children won\’t understand this abstractness about a concept until they\’ve learned to understand that an \”idea\” is a concept.\r Think about it. Some great abstracts are God, wind, and charm. You can\’t see them. But they\’re there, nonetheless. You see the results of God\’s power by looking at a sunset, a new calf, or into your child\’s eyes. But you can\’t SEE God. You can feel the wind, see its gentle or destructive powers, see things being blown about by the wind, but you can\’t SEE the wind. And you can see the results of someone being charmed into falling for a scam, but you can\’t actually see the snake oil oozing out of the con-artist\’s pores (though you might feel that you can!).
Same with kids. They can listen to a story, repeat what you say, and regurgitate it back to you, but they don\’t sincerely understand the concept of what it would have been like to be the person in that story until they are 8, 10, or even 12 years old. \r We start teaching children to write at 4, 5, or 6 and they eventually learn to draw the connections between the written words and the spoken words. They learn to write by mimicking what you\’ve written down on paper. But it\’s hard to get a child to write a whole sentence in the first grade. It takes practice on the child\’s part and patience on the teacher\’s or parents part. After weeks and months of practice, the concept of connecting all those written words together into an understandable string of words called a \”sentence\” actually gels in the child\’s mind. The same is true for trying to teach children in the lower grades how to write paragraphs and essays.
A paragraph is a more or less structured concept that adults have created that strings several of those \”nebulous\” sentences together into a collective thought. Still a concept, an abstract. A young child, who has enough trouble trying to understand what the purpose of a sentence is, will have even more trouble understanding the purpose of a paragraph. Because it\’s an abstract concept.
Draw the connection between those sentences and something CONCRETE that the child can see and touch and feel and you finally have an abstract CONCEPT that the child can see, and therefore understand. Numbers are a concept, and idea in our heads. Numerals, on the other hand (5, 8, 43) are the concrete version that we can see so we use numerals to explain, on paper, the idea of adding and subtracting numbers. With numerals (or blocks or hash marks drawn on a paper), the student can see the concept he/she is trying portray and understand.
Parents, teachers, and the community in general need to learn why it is so hard for children to try and learn certain abstract concepts. We, as parents and teachers, have created ad infinitum different ways/formulae/rubrics to get children to write paragraphs and essays. Most of those rubrics don\’t work with younger children because they are TOO HARD to learn. They are concepts, abstract and nebulous, that a child can mimic, but won\’t truly understand until they are old enough to understand abstracts. Children (even some high school students) need something simple, something easy to remember, something visual that they can touch and feel, that they can use as a tactile reminder of what that concept is all about. The words \”paragraph\” and \”essay\” are abstract concepts. The use of something visual and tactile will turn those abstract concepts into something concrete that a child can understand, usually better, faster and more permanently, than other concepts.
Enter the Hand. With five fingers on a hand and five sentences in a paragraph, a child has something visual that he/she can look at and manipulate. Using this concrete device the child will eventually be able to draw the connection between the idea of a paragraph or essay and the written, concrete version of that idea. Use your hand as the concrete manipulative, or find a curriculum that does, to turn the abstract idea into a concrete one from which your student can learn.

Homeschooling in the 21st Century - 7 Teaching Tips to Promote Student Learning as a Parent

Tip 1: Create a supportive learning environment.
Students are more inclined to succeed when provided with an accepting and supportive environment. It is paramount students enjoy positive relations with fellow students and teachers as part of a caring, inclusive learning environment. As parent/teachers participating in a homeschool setting we must be sure to positively engage our children in learning. When children experience negative emotions in combination with a learning experience they may try to avoid any future experiences at all costs!
Tip 2: Celebrate reflective thinking and actions.
When a student is able to stand back and understand the path that was taken on a journey in learning their ability to objectively see this solidifies the learning. The experience of reflection helps us to assimilate the new learning that is taking place. As a parent/teacher be mindful of looking only for correct answers. Having your child reflect on their work is more important than whether or not it was correct.
Tip 3: Enhance the relevance of new learning.
We are more likely to remember what makes sense to us. Developing relevant learning experiences for your learners will result in more effective learning. As a parent/teacher use your home, environment and curriculum as tools in learning. Everyday experiences need to be integrated into learning. Your student is NEVER too old to learn by life experience.
Tip 4: Give room for shared learning.
Effective teachers embrace their class as a learning community giving opportunity for all members - including the teacher - to take part in shared learning. Learning is taken further when students are encouraged to work and reflect on ideas as a group. I often reflect that some of my most poignant parent/teacher moments were when I was learning right alongside my children. There were times when I genuinely had no clue and investigated right along with the team. They often cottoned on quicker than me!
Tip 5: Connect new knowledge to prior learning experiences.
When new learning is integrated with prior learning students will benefit greatly. Effective teaching involves building methodically on what students know and have experienced previously and anticipating the needs that might arise. The advantage we have as parent/teachers is time. We are given many opportunities to re-visit concepts and tie them in with new ones. It could be 7.30 pm and life may spring an opportunity to tie in a piece of knowledge to solidify the learning for the day!!
Tip 6: Give opportunities to learn!
Dishing out worksheets and having students fill them in does not a learning opportunity make. Many students are not afforded the time to practice, engage with and transfer new learning. Effective teachers facilitate genuine opportunities for practice. As parent/teachers we can get a little wrapped up in getting a result. We must give our children the room to just explore concepts without assessment. Rehearsing the steps for creating a wonderful painting is as important as the painting itself.
Tip 7: Understand the impact of your own teaching.
Effective teaching practice requires teachers to inquire in to the impact their teaching is having on their students. Teachers need to understand where their students are at before they start. Teachers then need to understand what strategies they might engage in to effectively the given outcomes for their group. When we look at the results of our teaching we need to be able to understand how these results might change our future plans in approach. As parent/teachers we have to be brutally honest about what does and doesn\’t work. Having the courage to admit something is not working can be difficult. Getting over this hurdle and being able to change our approach as the needs of our students change will bring much success.
Essentially as teachers we are leading a group of people through experiences that will help prepare them for their future. Creating positive experiences creates positive learners and participants in society.

Homeschooling Your Children: The Basic Facts!

Wikipedia states that Home education, also called homeschooling or home school, is an educational alternative in which children are educated at home by their parents, in contrast to the compulsory attendance which takes place in an institution with a campus such as a public school or private school.
Around the world Homeschooling has been increasing quite substantially over the last 4 years. In 2003, in the United States, approximately 1.1 million children were Home Schooled, up 29% from 850,000 in 1999. Recent figures show that Homeschooling in other Western Countries are also continuing to grow. For example, an estimated 50,000 children are considered \”home-educated\” in the United Kingdom; Australia - 26,500; and in Canada (as at 2001) it was estimated that 80,000 children were educated at home with the numbers continuing to increase.
Most home education advocates have individual motivations to home-educate. Academic and social results of home education are varied and are the source of vibrant debate. Some feel that they can more effectively tailor a students academic program to suit an individual strengths and weaknesses, especially children who are gifted or have learning disabilities. Others are religious parents who see non-religious education as contrary to their moral or religious systems. Still others feel that the negative social pressures of schools, such as bullying, drugs, school violence, and other school-related problems, are impacting negatively to a child\’s development. Many parents simply like the idea of teaching their own children rather than letting someone else do so.
A common concern voiced about home-educated children is they lack the social interaction with students and society that a school environment provides. Many home-education families address these concerns by joining numerous organizations, including home-education cooperatives, independent study programs and specialized enrichment groups for physical education, art, music, and debate. Most are also active in community groups. Home-educated children generally socialize with other children the same way that school children do: outside of school, via personal visits and through sports teams, clubs, and religious groups.
The academic effectiveness of homeschooling is largely a settled issue. Numerous studies have confirmed the academic integrity of home education programs, demonstrating that on average, home-educated students outperform their publicly-run school peers by 30 to 37 percentile points across all subjects. The performance gaps between minorities and gender that plague publicly-run schools are virtually non-existent amongst home-educated students.

In recent years, computers have become an integral part of everyday life. Now, more people own computers than ever before, and the numbers continue to rise. As a result, children are learning how to use computers in school at a much earlier age than ever before.
There is a wide array of educational software available for children of all ages. This provides you, the parent, with many options when choosing educational software for your children. Since many educational games have been shown to help children learn and improve their skills in many subjects, these games have become an important part of a child\’s learning experience. But choosing the right educational software makes all the difference. For this reason, it is essential to take care when choosing computer software for your children.
The best educational software is designed by people who know how children think. By nature, children like to see, touch, and interact with a thing in order to learn about it. This same concept also applies to computer software. For this reason, interactive applications have become so prevalent. Among these, there are many different types of software applications. Some are actual simulations, while others are open-ended creativity tools. There are also a number of structured activities available for the computer such as puzzles, tutorials, and reference titles. They are made by the 700+ publishers that specialize in educational items.
Because there are so many options available to you, selecting those that will truly help your child to learn may seem like an overwhelming task. This, however, does not have to be the case. When choosing computer software for your child, there are a few factors you should consider.
First, make sure you choose software that your child will be able to operate. This is especially important if you have a small child, as he or she will probably only be able to use the mouse. Be sure the application you choose accommodates this, as your child\’s attention span will probably not last very long, otherwise.
When choosing software, you should also take care to select programs and games that best fit the interests of your child. While it is wonderful to encourage the learning of new skills and acceptance of new ideas, your child is less likely to take part in something of which he or she has little or no interest. Introducing your child to newer concepts and skills more gradually, however, may peak their interest and help build character and skill.
