Imagine your accountant calls and tells you that you have missed your revenue goals for the first quarter. Imagine this accountant tells you that unless you can find a way to increase your income you wont have enough cash to meet expenses next month. What steps can you take today to make sure you never get this phone call?
In my experience many career schools will define their mission in precise terms and depend on only one or two sources of primary income. Many schools will say we teach nursing or we teach electronics. Try stepping back and defining your mission as we convey knowledge and information to help people achieve their goals. This statement is very broad and allows for a large interpretation of what you are capable of delivering. Here are a few key ways to expand your career school in the upcoming year:
- Educate your business community:
Presumably most career schools are preparing individuals with skills to work for local businesses and institutions. How many of you spend a percentage of your recruiting time talking to these businesses about your programs? The business community can offer a lot of information on how you can improve your programs to meet their ever changing needs. By developing a relationship with these businesses they will become familiar with your programs and offerings, they may begin to seek you out when they need to hire new personnel.
To reach out to these businesses you need to develop a sales system. A system is a method or technique that you have in place to contact these businesses on a regular basis. You should set up a calendar that you refer to when marketing or educating these businesses. You want to send mailings, newsletters, and information about your school in a systematic fashion, i.e. once every two weeks, month, or quarter. You should be physically meeting with these businesses once per year or even more often if you can manage it. The key ingredient to a sales system is regular, planned, and systematic contact.
In the above steps you are building a relationship with local businesses about your programs and offerings. Once that system is in place you can start using those relationships to increase your revenue even further. These businesses will always have a need to keep their current employees trained on the latest techniques and work processes. Many of these businesses will have unique systems and needs that your school as a provider of information and knowledge would be ideal to fill. You can develop personalized and private training seminars and programs based on information you learn from working with these businesses. For example, if you offer training to nurses the local hospital may pay you to develop a private training program for their nurses to teach a course in crisis management.
Many career schools offer a bookstore that is one step up from a broom closet with books stacked on shelves. When a student signs up for a program someone retrieves the textbooks needed for a class and gives them to the student. If you can identify with this then you are selling your bookstore short. There are hundreds of books and other materials that your bookstore can offer that may not be part of the standard curriculum, but could benefit your students. For example, if you offer training in real estate or financial services you can offer books on sales training, computer training, and books on investing in real estate.
You could take it a step further by having your instructors use some of these books or equipment in the classroom and recommend them to students, who can then find the products in your bookstore. You could even go the final step and put your bookstore on the Internet and sell your items through an e-commerce site.
As a provider of information and knowledge you are an ideal source of new information. You could tap the knowledge of your instructors and current curriculum to develop new custom training materials for current students and local businesses. For example, if you offer training in social services you may write a custom training pack of new employment laws and techniques to sell to your current students and the local businesses who need to keep up with these current trends. You could develop custom training materials as part of a private training contract and sell both materials and the training program. Combining these strategies with your current marketing programs will develop and enhance your brand image. This brand image translates into brand equity. You can then spend some of this equity by putting your name behind or on new products and services. Businesses will come to trust these services and offerings because they know about you and your programs.

Do You Benefit From College Education?

All students and their parents know that going to a university or college is not cheap. And as if that wasn\’t enough, the costs increase each year as well. Due to the increased costs of getting a higher education either at a college or a university, people have started to question the actual value of university or college education.
Which costs are we talking about? First and foremost the tuition cost but also the time full-time employment students lose when going to college. In addition most students have thousands of dollars of debt when they come out of school. Is it really worth it? Is college education an investment that pays off? These are questions any student and their parents should consider. In this article I will briefly discuss an approach for answering these questions. If we use a strictly economic model, it\’s pretty easy: You must simply review the investment of the education and estimate the return from it. This can be done both from a personal view and from the view of society.
From a financial point of view, reliable data to suggest that on average and over time a college graduate will earn a great deal more than a high school graduate. The United States Census bureau estimates that over a lifetime a university or college graduate will earn on average around $2.1 million dollars compared to an median lifetime income of $1.2 million dollars for a high school graduate.
In comparison with the cost of attending a four year public university or college at an average of cost of about $10,000 per year and even adding the cost of lost working time, it is very clear that attending university or collage has financial value.
But there are more benefits than the strict financial. In a report published by the Institute for Higher Education Policy in 1998, there are evidence that people who completed a college or university program experienced a number of ancillary benefits. Some of the major benefits was:
- improved quality of life for their children\r
- more hobbies and leisure activities\r
- higher levels of saving\r
- increased mobility; personal as well as professional\r
- better consumer decision making

Across the US, every state requires pharmacists to have successfully graduated from a college of pharmacy that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and to have passed one or more exams administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (depending on the state). The working pharmacist may then proceed to apply for employment in any pharmacy in the US. Certification is required only if the pharmacist wishes to dispense specifically regulated pharmaceuticals that are not covered in traditional pharmacy training, such as psychiatric, oncology, nuclear, or nutritional support pharmacy.
Those who assist pharmacists in everyday routine tasks are known as pharmacy technicians, and they must seek certification in order to qualify for employment. Aspiring assistants must possess a minimum of an associate degree in a related field, and be able to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board National Exam to become certified pharmacy technicians.
Before embarking on any course promising certification, it is imperative that the student engage in a fact-finding mission. Talk to individual colleges and inquire if they are providing pharmacy technician training, or if they are offering certificates in a pharmaceutical specialty for practicing pharmacists.

How To Compare 529 Plans?

If you are investing in a 529 state plan, it is easy to compare. The reason is that American citizens are allowed to take any state plan, and then they can even switch between plans if they want to. That is the reason everyone wants to compare 529 plans before they actually open an account. So how do you make the comparison? What do you look for?
Well, it is not quite straightforward to compare 529 plans of different states. There are too many things to take care of. However, here are some guidelines that might help you to make the comparison.
1. Look into the tax breaks the plans are offering. In fact, if your own state plan is giving you a tax break, then it is not necessary to look into the plans of other states. Any limitations that exist in your own plan will be overcome by the tax deductions your plans offer. Currently, 31 out of the 50 states in America provide tax deductions on their 529 plans, along with the District of Columbia. These 31 states are: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
2. Look for the expenses of the plans. The expenses you will have to bear when taking a plan will be the enrollment fees, annual maintenance fees and the program management fees. This is a good parameter to compare 529 plans. Some plans, like that of the state of Wyoming have very high expenses. Even the plans of the stats of Alabama, Arizona, Maine and Tennessee are very expensive and hence not at all good choices.
3. See what kind of investment options the plans will offer you. Most plans will give you at least three investment options, conservative and aggressive. Some of the plans, like that of the state of Virginia, provide as many as 21 American funds, giving a very good choice for investors.
4. There are two kinds of 529 plans - those that can be opened directly and those which require a broker to open. The broker, or the state adviser, will help in opening the plan and also give tips and pointers on making investments. But it must be understood that broker plans are more expensive than the plans that can be opened directly.

Life for college students can prove to be a very hectic and stressful time. Learning to sufficiently recognize stress and deal with it in a positive way can have an enormous impact on a student\’s college experience in general. Falling grades, confusing assignments, struggling relationships with friends, and being away from familiar scenery can all have a serious impact on the amount of stress an average student experiences.
Look at some of the facts:
Stress a student can experience can often make a college student sick. Stress has a very profound effect on the effectiveness and ability of the immune system to fight germs and common airborne ailments such as colds and coughs.
As much as 75% of college students, who saw a doctor, saw one based on common symptoms of stress and exhaustion. Based on this, The University of Wisconsin has done research to show that the five largest causes of college stress disorders include peer pressure, competition, separation from family, freedom, and choosing a major or career.
With the joys of freedom and opportunities to make new social connections, comes the financial burden. If the whole college experience didn\’t cost enough, now students are being tested financially in a time where reading the fine print and comparing a few simple interest rates can mean decades paying it back or years re-establishing your credit rating.
The most obvious method of cutting down the stress is identifying it at the source. Some things you cannot do much to avoid such as homework, tests, or shifts at work; however, you can set certain times to do each of these activities that create the least amount of conflict in your schedule. Have you signed up for an extracurricular activity that is sucking up your time and taking away from the time to get things done you need to? Drop it! In the end, it is the grades, your networking, and overall health that determine a successful experience.
Other useful ways to take a stand against the stress in your life include making to do list to effectively manage your time, spacing out assignments so you focus on each one the best you can, and don\’t be afraid to talk to teachers, friends, or tutor labs to help you when you need it most.
Having alone time and time with your friends is different, and a combination of both is vital to most individuals that want to keep refreshed, recharged, and content. Also staying in contact with friends from high school and family members at home are two things that can be done to keep from feeling alone, defeated and stressed.
If you think you may be the only one around you that is experiencing stress, think again. Don\’t be afraid to seek some help with a counselor or medical specialist if you think the stress is becoming unbearable. These people are there to help and would gladly help you restore your sense of well-being.

Past
The Board of Madras University was formulated in the year 1840 which is in fact the precursor of the Presidency College today. The historical Charles Wood\’s Educational Dispatch put forth a systematic educational police whereby the University of Madras came into place as a replica of London University.
Present
With the status of one of the three oldest universities in India (the others being Calcutta University and Mumbai University), Madras University (or the University of Madras) was established on September 5, 1857. Located in the city of Madras (now known as Chennai), the university has five campuses - Marina, Guindy, Chepauk,Taramani and Maduravayal.
Academics
There is a plethora of specialization courses on offer in over 50 departments of the university. On the other hand, all the engineering programs of the university were transferred to Anna University back in 2004. In addition to regular teaching/learning processes, the various departments undertake research studies as well.
The Madras University has about 43 external research institutes. At any given time, there are over 8000 students enrolled in different graduate and post-graduate courses of the university. A 300 member strong faculty caters to the all round development of the students.
