Beware of the Five-Minute Break! (From A Slice of A Homeschool Life)

Posted on October 23, 2008

Do your children ask during school hours if they can take just a little, teeny five-minute break? Mine do. I\’m not sure how they came up with the idea that they are entitled to do this (probably the first time they tried it, and it worked!), but they insist that five-minute breaks should be a part of every home-schooling day. Lunch and recess? No problem. Five-minute breaks? Beware!

So,what\’s terrible about a little five-minute break? The problem is, they somehow turn into fifteen-minutes or more, and then you find out that in addition to growing longer (all by themselves), they are also addictive! Yes, first it was just one five-minute break a day. But soon the requests changed to \”When I finish my math can I take a five-minute break?\” \”When I\’m done with spelling, can I?\” And then reading, and on and on. It wouldn\’t surprise me in the least if I opened a teacher\’s manual and saw the instruction: \”STOP NOW FOR A FIVE-MINUTE BREAK.\” Why not? They seem to be everywhere.

Okay, five minutes is not a lot of time. I realize that. The problem is that kids do not. Really. To them, being granted permission for a break is like getting a key to a magical door to another world: they step into it hoping they will never have to come back. Take my oldest son, for instance.

Hungry for his next five-minute \”fix,\” Brian\’s eyes, which are large anyway, suddenly take on beagle proportion, and he puts on all the puppy-dog pathos he can muster. (Please, Mom, p-l-eeease, can I take a 5-minute break?) And despite the five minutes stretching into ten or more, I am then subjected to a barrage of complaints such as, \”Oh, already! I just started playing with Matt! It can\’t be five minutes already!\”

ME: Well, actually, it\’s FIFTEEN minutes!

BRIAN: (laughingly) Fifteen minutes? No way! No way!

Despite his blossoming skills at telling time, he just cannot fathom the realities of a sixty-second minute. Somewhere in the mysterious regions of his just turned seven-year-old brain, he thinks of five minutes in terms of seconds (300 of them) and then expects to live them out in years; What else can account for his daily baffled expression when I inform him that his time is up?

Once, losing all patience, I made the radical move of threatening to abolish five-minute breaks from our school. My children were in arms instantly:

ME: Where is it written that you must have five-minute breaks?!

THEM: Mom! EVERYONE has five-minute breaks!!

ME: I don\’t! I never get a break! What about that?

(For some reason, this morsel of truth never evokes anything other than sheepish smiles: It\’s true, but they don\’t care!)

Of course, I do take breaks. I nurse the baby when she\’s ready for it, but I keep within ear shot of the \”classroom\”–just close enough to keep up my stream of \”Okay, no more talking! That\’s enough! Be quiet, you two! Brian, did you finish ALL those spelling words? Kaitlin, I thought you were reading!!\”

(It seems the closer we get to the end of the school year, the more my children suddenly have to say to each other across the table during school. It\’s actually a law of the universe, like gravity: The closer kids are to being DONE with something, the more they drag it out.)

Are you thinking that our methods are not enough fun, that school shouldn\’t be such a drag that kids can\’t wait to get away from it? I agree. I just haven\’t figured out, yet, how to complete all the requirements of the school year in a way that is always fun.

Learning, let\’s face it, is sometimes hard work. Perhaps in some ideal world (and maybe in some ideal homes), it\’s always fun, but that isn\’t the case in my experience or our school. My kids show me they enjoy learning by all the spontaneous inquiries they make, reading they do, and so on. The trick, I suppose, is to encourage their natural curiosity with the right amount of work, while trying not to overwhelm them in the areas in which they are not naturally inclined.

Until I get that right, however, I\’ll just have to live with the five-minute break. Only for now on, I\’m setting a timer!

Conversational Hypnosis - The History Of Indirect Hypnosis Technologies

Posted on October 23, 2008

Today, there are a number of exceptional \”indirect\” hypnosis home study courses on the market. As of late, master hypnotists have been busy assembling their own personal covert hypnosis courses based on all of their years of practice and hard-won knowledge. Maybe you have already heard of some of the course titles such as \”Conversational Hypnosis\”, \”Covert Hypnosis\”, \”Underground Hypnosis\”, and so on. Of course, they are all wildly popular because they teach you how to hypnotize people secretly without their knowledge. And although each of these courses have their own unique rapport, trance, and induction tactics, almost all of them can attribute their success to the ground-breaking techniques created by a handful of prolific therapists of old. In this article, you will discover the origins of modern-day covert hypnosis and meet a few of its \”inventors.\”

Although trance and influence can probably be traced back to the time of Moses, covert or indirect hypnosis technology has only been honed, perfected, and publicized for the last 50 years or so. The man credited with creating the first covert hypnosis system was Milton Erickson, a noted psychiatrist, psychologist and psychotherapist who gained his proficiency beginning in the mid-1950\’s. He has often been called the \”father\” of indirect hypnosis and is still regarded as one of the greatest hypnotists of all-time. Mr. Erickson\’s psychological techniques were significant and powerful enough to draw acclaim and a sizable following of eager proteges.

Among these were Richard Bandler and John Grinder, co-founders of NLP, or neuro-linguistic programming in the early 1970\’s. Bandler and Grinder developed NLP largely due to their modeling of Erickson and other noted clinicians of the day, as well as their work in linguistics and gestalt therapy. Over the past few decades, NLP has produced thousands of practitioners worldwide and has been proven to help alleviate phobias and addictions, as well as to improve performance and re frame mindsets. Although the scientific community sometimes opts to dismiss the effectiveness of NLP, the results speak for themselves.

Of course, there are hundreds of additional psychological innovators that have contributed to the growth and development of \”indirect\” hypnosis. There are simply too many to list here. However, it should be noted that because of their tireless work, study, and refinement, we all now have the opportunity (as laypersons) to learn the fascinating technology of covert hypnosis.

Want to learn more about Covert Hypnosis and how you can hypnotize people secretly without their knowledge in just minutes? Jarrod Cross is a 17-year veteran in the hypnosis, NLP, and self improvement fields and will help you discover how you too can quickly become an underground covert hypnotist…even if you have absolutely no experience. NLP and Modelling Excellence

Posted on October 22, 2008

Do you have dreams of a financially independent future? Do you have dreams of good health or to be happy and confident? Many of us have dreams like these but unfortunately the majority of people just don\’t reach those dreams.

You can read books and research on the internet but can often end up with information overload, but still not be any closer to realising your dreams.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can assist you in realising your dreams by working on the basis of studying excellence and teaching you how to use language or the mind to achieve your desired result. You must have a positive mindset to be able to have success in achieving your chosen outcome.

We all have the necessary resources within us to success but many people just don\’t know how to use those resources. You need to believe in yourself that if someone else can do something then there is no reason why you can\’t do it just as well.

If you can learn their skills and strategies, both internally in their mind and externally in their behaviour, then you can use them to model your own skills and behaviours. NLP works on this basis, to model successful people\’s behaviours and teach others how to be just as successful. If you are going to model a persons skills then don\’t settle for mediocrity but choose a model of excellence.

If there is anything in your life that you would like to improve on then by using NLP techniques you can learn how to model someone else in that particular area. You just need to learn from someone how knows exactly how to excel in that area and learn from them. If you can find yourself a good mentor you can improve your life and excel in whatever area of your life you choose.

Many organisations use the NLP modelling techniques to teach their employees how to model the behaviours of their top performing employees. NLP modelling skills can also be used in sport, health, education and personal development.

Some people are top performers in a particular area while others are average performers and others still are poor performers. NLP discovered that it is internal strategies and thinking that makes a big difference in performance levels and by learning the strategies of the top performers you can teach the average performers how to perform better.

By using the NLP approach to model excellence gives you the methods to discover what the top performers to do make them as successful as they are. This makes it possible or you to model their strategies and behaviours and improve your own performance and you too will soon be performing as well as the best of them.

Post Hypnotic Suggestions in Hypnosis

Posted on October 22, 2008

As hypnotists, when we hypnotize a client and we use the power of suggestion to help them reach a specific goal or alter a certain behaviour pattern, we usually look to achieve that result for the long term. It\’s true that short term goals can benefit from hypnotherapy as well, like using hypnotherapy to prepare for a job interview, for example. But usually, there is the desire to change behaviour permanently.

Whether it\’s to improve confidence, or the ability to relax, or whatever else the reason may be to seek therapy, a client usually seeks a permanent behavioural change or improvement. Even though the therapy itself is relatively brief, say 30 minutes or so a few times per week, the idea is that the result will carry on in day-to-day life, outside of the hypnotic state.

Post hypnotic suggestion means just that, that once you are out of the hypnotic state, you will have taken a suggestion onboard unconsciously, and you will apply it in your every day life. For example, if I say to you while in hypnosis, \”you will feel more confident\”, my goal is that you not only feel it as you are hearing it, hypnotized, but that you will in fact feel more confident in your regular wakened state, without having to consciously check yourself or think about it.

The term post hypnotic suggestion shouldn\’t be associated with behaviours that aren\’t typical of the person, or that go against their core beliefs or values. For example, you can\’t be driven to do things against your will. Post-hypnotic suggestion will alter those behaviours which you have consciously chosen to work on or improve. It\’s not an exact science, and certainly there needs to be ethical and professional practice on the part of the hypnotherapist, but a client needn\’t worry that he will be lead to do things in his wakened state that he wouldn\’t willingly choose to do.

Post hypnotic suggestion can be delivered in many ways. I personally prefer to use positive suggestion rather than negative. In other words, I will say something like \”you will feel calm and reassured\”, rather than say \”you won\’t feel anxious\”. This is the same targeted outcome, to reduce anxiety in my client, but I choose to deliver the message with positive rather than negative wording. As far as direct or indirect suggestion, in one on one therapy, I go with what I feel will work for the individual. On our recordings, obviously it\’s a bit of both.

Sports Hypnosis And Why It\’s Like Taking Your Car To The Mechanic

Posted on October 22, 2008

The term \”sports hypnosis\” may conjure up fears in you about having your mind controlled by somebody other than you. You even may fear that a hypnotist will make you do something humiliating in public such as barking like a dog or some other nonsensical act. All of those fears can be put to rest now!

Hypnosis, whether it is used for sports or any other purpose, is simply a mechanism to make some sort of change in your subconscious. In simplified terms, think of going to visit a hypnotist as taking your car to an auto mechanic. The mechanic will either \”pop the hood\” or raise the car on the lift in order to get access to the necessary parts. What you have to remember is that an auto mechanic can do one of three things: fix something wrong, service your car to keep it running properly, or (better yet) make actual improvements to the car!

A qualified hypnotist can do the same things: help you fix problems, give you a \”mental tune up\”, or even help install new programming to get you to the next level even though nothing is \”broken\” with you. Remember that the \”hypnosis\” part is simply getting you to relax so that the hypnotist can access your subconscious mind just like the auto mechanic can access your car\’s parts. What makes hypnotists unique is the array of techniques and therapies they employ when you are ALREADY in a relaxed, hypnotic state.

Before going to a hypnotist, ask the person in what therapies and techniques they are qualified. Some may do age regression work, some may use Time Line Therapy, and others use traditional Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques. Make sure that you are honest with the hypnotist and state your intention whether it is to clean up some past trauma, get a \”mental tune up\”, or simply improve what is already working so that you can get to the next level in your sport. This honesty, combined with an understanding of hypnosis and what it can do, will go a long way toward helping you get the most out of your time and money invested with a qualified hypnotist who is trained to help you with your specific situations.

Can Crime and Hypnosis Be Related?

Posted on October 21, 2008

Hypnosis is a practice where a connection is made with the subconscious mind in order to alter a pattern of thinking or acting in order to improve a state of health, relieve pain and/or improve ones personality and self esteem.

Hypnosis has been used in medical practices and therapies on a number of patients in order to improve their present state when all other ways have failed, for example, hypnosis is used often to help patients deal with depression and/or terminal diseases.

How Can Crime and Hypnosis Be Related?

Because hypnosis works with the subconscious mind in order to alter it and change your thinking and behavioral pattern it has been suggested more than once that crime and hypnosis may be related, however no proof has been issued to sustain the claim. The problem in believing in crime and hypnosis is that usually it takes more then one session in order to change ones way of behaving or thinking especially when dealing with crime like making someone commit a crime that is not in his or her nature.

Crime and hypnosis can be related however, when a therapist does not respect the wishes of the patient and does not follow the desired or requested pattern needed or requested by the patient to cure.

Again, crime and hypnosis can be connected when someone uses it to induce a pattern of thinking and/or change someones behavior without their consent or knowledge. However, it is very hard to perform hypnosis on someone without his or her knowledge and therefore it is not a common crime in hypnosis practice.

Practice Hypnosis on Yourself And Avoid Crime

Many people today practice hypnosis on themselves by using the help of CDs and DVDs as well as books for guidance and assistance; you can also find many online sites that will help you understand your body in order to perform hypnosis correctly and achieve desired results as soon as possible.

How Soon Can You See Results from Hypnosis Therapy?

Depending on your present state of health and stress level you can see results as soon as the first session or at times depending on what you are trying to improve can take as long as months. It is important that you follow the exact procedures and indications provided through the CD or DVD when practicing hypnosis on yourself and if you are following a hypnosis therapy, you must finish the required session in order to ensure the desired pattern has set in as you wanted.

If you want to learn more about crime and hypnosis please visit our site which is free to the public. You\’ll find the best tips on everything to do with hypnosis

Self Hypnosis Change - Changing Bad Habits With Self Hypnosis

Posted on October 21, 2008

In an individual\’s life, a subtle or even a major change in his life can be very hard. Often, when disturbing thoughts, societal pressures, stress, and self-doubt are summed up, these make a tremendous impact on one\’s perspective or behavior, causing a negative habit or outlook in life. This is primarily why self hypnosis change is very helpful.

Self hypnosis change is another variation of hypnosis treatment. Basically this is very much in the same manner as a therapist led session. The idea is to positively reinforcing one\’s self by the using one of the most powerful tools a person possess, the mind. Such technique aids a person to gradually topple down several layers of negative energies that lie within themselves. This is done through positive reframing of one\’s own thought process. For this to be effective, it is vital that the individual undergoing such treatment can see himself succeed at reaching a goal, positively visualizing the outcome.

When an individual begins the process of self hypnosis change, clearing the mind and relaxing the body are the a few points that need to be learned. This is usually covered during a typical session. The first part of the exercise is aimed at making the mind more free, and the body relaxed one part at a time. The next procedure then focuses on addressing the issues the individual wants to resolve, implanting the mentioned positive vision. When doing so, it is generally important to use only positive language when making suggestions. Doing the whole exercise for a series of days will eventually result to a positive change in one\’s self. This has long been recognized as an excellent, reliable, and cost-effective means of establishing new choices in life that lead to real change.

There are different avenues available that can be taken in learning self hypnosis change. One option is to get lessons from licensed or certified therapists. Another option is to read and understand how the whole exercise is done through the use of books, magazines, and articles made available on-line. Whichever option you take, it doesn\’t necessarily cost much to learn the basics about self hypnosis change.

Very powerful and positive results can be achieved when self hypnosis change is learned, although the technique may take quite some time to master. Learning how to relax and breathe in a meditative sort of way may be difficult for some to master, however, with more practice self hypnosis can be a very beneficial tool for anyone to use, regardless if this is just for stress reduction or to help a person achieve his goal, or change a habit.

Using Self-Hypnosis For Self-Gathering - What Is That?

Posted on October 19, 2008

In amongst my usual ranting and commentary on my blog this week, I owned up to a big mistake I made when my new website went live… My business partner has been berating me on his blog for committing this cardinal sin and I have regressed to being a naughty schoolboy… When our new website went live, I deleted my old blog… Yes indeed I deleted three years of entries, links, articles, commentaries and much more besides… Apparently since then, we have lost on average 200 people a day visiting the website… Naughty Adam!

Recently, I wrote an article describing the utter busy-ness going in my life with my work, wedding, moving home, TV recording, new projects - I would not have life any other way of course. I want to take a slightly different strand of this, let me explain…

What with all this activity in my life and some emotional roller coaster events this past week, I can often feel scattered… Like a tiny amount of butter spread too thinly over a very large piece of bread!

You know the feeling I am talking about, don\’t you?

This technique is designed for self-simplifying and uniting us with ourselves once again.

It is all too often, that we gather around ourselves making situations, things, people, and desires far too complex in our lives. We can get lost as to who the real us is. When we gather ourselves in the present, things get simplified.

I use this technique in self-hypnosis to help myself and I also use it with my therapeutic clients. What we do within this technique is to unite opposites and reclaim our real sense of who we are.

Step One: Be somewhere where you are free of distractions and are going to be undisturbed for a while. Have your arms and legs uncrossed.

I recommend you learn how to take yourself into self-hypnosis - use a good method. However, in the absence of such, focus on your breathing, slow it down, engage in the moment, move your awareness inwards and really tune in to your body. Close your eyes and move your awareness inside of you.

Use any relaxation or meditation technique you may know to get into a truly receptive state of mind and having a nice relaxed body. Take all the time you need to do this step thoroughly - the receptivity and stillness you create is what is going to amplify this technique to make it so very effective for you.

Step Two: Engaged in the moment and focusing on yourself, begin to imagine a safe, beautiful place; this can be somewhere you have been to before or somewhere you create in your mind. Really immerse yourself in this place, see the sights of it, hear the sounds, smell the air, sense the life and feel how it feels to be in this wonderful place.

Step Three: Now we let the fun begin and now we start gathering…. Let yourself begin to imagine, first, to your right, a sunny landscape of yellows and blues; then, second, to your left, a darker place; maybe a swamp at dusk or nighttime or a forest with a cave barely visible between the trees. Go back and forth, right to left, picturing the landscape and its brightness, then to your left, picturing the darkened swamp or forest. Let the images become more and more detailed each time as you look at them, flicking between them in your mind: right, left, then right, and so on.

Step Four: Now, moving your awareness behind you, let yourself become aware of heat. Imagine a very, very warm, fire; the sun on a hot, tin roof; or a desert or a furnace bright with heat. Let yourself begin to imagine feeling that heat radiating from behind you. Sense how it feels. As the heat begins to become uncomfortable, move your awareness ahead of you, where there is freezing water, floating ice, or a barren, frozen tundra. Begin to feel the front of your body; notice your face and your hands becoming very, very cold. Let all the coldness gather.

Bring the previous two steps together - Now move, right (light) to the sunny landscape; left (dark) to the darkened swamp; behind to the heat; and ahead to the coldness. Become familiar with a pattern of going slowly from right (light) to left (dark) and then back (hot) to front (cold). You can do this, giving yourself time in each direction to gather the feelings and sensations of each direction.

Step Five: Gradually moving your awareness to high above you, imagine a water wheel turing high above you. What is special and unusual about this water-wheel is that the liquid turning it is liquid feeling. That\’s right folks, imagine a mass of feelings all liquidly and flowing through this water wheel.

Now allow a rainbow of that liquid feeling to spill from the water wheel and wash over you and through you. Let it surround you, so that you can now move from feeling to feeling. That great water wheel is slowly spilling its liquid feelings all over you, washing all over you. As each feeling washes over and through you, the next one begins to come from the next bucket of the wheel, splashing and washing over you. Imagine that as this happens, you are becoming freer of all that is not you. You are beginning to sense your true self and get a sense of oneness.

Step Six: The first feeling that washes over you from the water wheel is one of curiosity and confusion. It washes over and through you. Let it soak in; feel it.

Then, the liquid of fear begins to wash over and through you. Let yourself feel fear, knowing there is another feeling on the way. Let it soak in and through you. And as it does, the next feeling of anger begins to wash over and through you. Let it soak in; tense your body, tighten your jaw just a bit, and feel the tension, the readiness of fight or flight. Let it soak in and through you.

As the water wheel above you continues to turn, spilling over and through you, begin to let go, releasing, and relaxing. Let this continue to happen and imagine that you are feeling lighter and clearer, feeling as if you are cleansing and gathering yourself together. Gently, allow your body to feel peaceful, safe, and free from the complexity of life.

Step Seven: As you develop this sense of oneness with yourself, know that you are participating more fully in the now, in this moment. Being here now, you are free of all divisions, and this unitary awareness of you is nurturing you and healing.

As you reach that deeper sense of oneness and of gathering all those opposites, imagine that you begin to hear your name.

Listen to your name, called affectionately, like it is an invitation. Hear your name being called out three times. Gently, you hear your name and begin to move slowly back into your usual state of being.

Wiggle your toes and fingers and open your eyes.

Really get yourself gathered in one place and develop a sense of oneness and that way you\’ll hopefully avoid being told off for deleting an entire blog when you should have known better!

NLP in Action - How To Create Super Motivation (Part Two)

Posted on October 19, 2008

At some point, don\’t we all wish we had more motivation?

More motivation to quit a bad habit, more motivation to get started on an important project that will bring us more success in our life, or even more motivation to clean out the garage so our spouse will be happy.

We all have a list of things we want to do or things we wish we would stop doing, but we just can\’t find the motivation to do so. Well the good news, as many researchers in the field of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) have made clear, is that such motivation can be created. And it can be created in a matter of a half hour or less.

The key is to create new links or pathways between certain behaviors and things we find either pleasurable or thins we find painful or uncomfortable. That\’s it, at the root of our motivations are the two triggers of pleasure and pain.

In the first article in this series, I put it like this: \r

Every change we create in our behavior results from changing how we associate that behavior to either pleasure or pain. Our mind automatically creates these links, with or without our conscious awareness that an association exists.

Let\’s start with a simple example. Suppose you really enjoy skiing. You live for winter and that beautiful white powder. And when winter finally comes, you cannot wait to get on the slopes.

Using NLP conditioning, you can create a link between the pleasures you derive from skiing to any other activity you want to motivate yourself to do more of. Suppose you are also a college student and you are having difficulty motivating yourself to study. If you want to create a motivation to get yourself to study more, you can actually link studying with the same sensations you get when you are skiing.

In other words you can create an association between skiing and studying so that you find studying just as pleasurable as you do skiing.

In order to create this association, you must first break your target behavior (studying) into its individual components. These could be, finding a quiet place to study that is conducive to good learning. Gathering all your materials together so you will not have to leave. Actually sitting in the chair and opening your books, etc.

In the process of doing this, you may find that one particular component is what you put off doing. Perhaps it is just simply getting to the library to study. Throughout your day, you may engage in all kinds of other activities that prevent or delay your getting to the library (by the way, if all this sounds like I had experience in these kinds of avoidance behaviors, you would be right).

If you find a particular behavior is what you have been avoiding, you can focus your efforts on this one target activity. Continuing on with our example of getting yourself to the library and finding a quiet corner to study, create a strong visualization of yourself going to the library, finding a table and sitting down to study.

Create a visual image of yourself doing this very clearly. In the next article, we will discuss how to then create an association with the pleasure you derive from skiing to create that same pleasure with your studying.

Just a few years after attempting suicide, Charles Brown has learned to literally \”re-wire\” and \”re-program\” his brain to achieve success in everything he attempts. He now teaches others how to use neuro-linquistic programming (NLP), subliminal technology, self hypnosis, and other methods to make major changes in their lives. He is the author of the free downloadable ebook, The Science of Change: How To Re-Program Your Mind and Transform Your Life This ebook has 49 pages of transformational information and can be downloaded at http://www.geocities.com/chbrown56
