First Birthday Party Ideas - What Not to Do
Posted on August 9, 2008
Often parents think that by coming up with some fabulous first birthday party ideas their child\'s party will be a huge success. Well, from experience this is not always the case. The success of the party is often in learning what NOT to do.
Take a moment to think back to the birthday parties you have attended in the past. As a \r mother of 3 I know I\'ve been to my share of first birthday celebrations. I\'m sure you\'re the same. Now think about the parties that you remember the most. Chance are that these parties have something to teach us.The good ones and the bad.
So let\'s start with some of the first birthday parties I\'ve been to that have taught me what \r not to do.I\'ve summarized them here for you.
Choosing the Location
Think carefully about this one. While a public park may seem like a good option, anticipate \r that other people will be there to. A football in the head may not be your child\'s idea of a \r great party. I recently attended a park party that had two other parties there as well, all \r competing for the barbecue and swings. In fact I\'ll be honest with you, one of the parties was \r mine for my 10 year old son. Whilst the 10 year old boys had a great time I don\'t think the \r one year olds at their party shared the same excitement. And just for the record \r my son didn\'t kick the ball that accidentally, almost hit an unassuming one year old.
While observing the one years olds at the party it also reminded me that once kids are mobile they find the most interesting things at parks and all too often put them into their mouths...I\'ll say no more on this subject.
Grandparent\'s homes can also be a bit tricky. One year olds don\'t seem to have the same \r respect for the Royal Doulton crockery or crystal. Or for the white crapet when eating the birthday cake with bright green icing.
Family Pets
Whilst your family pets may be special to you, chances are that you will have some old year \r olds and parents who do not have the same affection. I once had two children so petrified of \r our small, harmless Foxterrier dog that they screamed non stop and remained attached to their mother\'s leg until they left.
Party Games and Music
Make sure you plan these well in advance. I attended my young niece\'s party one year and \r everything was going fine until it came time for the party games. In the excitement my sister \r had forgotten to plan the music. Wanting to save the day I quickly suggested that since the \r games were outside I could use my husband\'s sound system in his car.The mistake I made was not checking the contents of his CD player. All went well for the first two songs until a song came on at full volume that contained some lyrics totally unsuitable for the innocent ears of those children present. In fact probably unsuitable for the parents attending too.I was a little embarrassed to say the least.
Re-Think Balloons
Often balloons are the first form of decoration that people consider for a first birthday \r party.They\'re colorful, fun and harmless right? Think again. The sound of a burst balloon can \r be very scary to a one year old. If you\'ve ever had a group of small children together you \r will know that when one child bursts into tears the others all follow in sympathy. I\'ve attended\r many parties that have resulted in ten, one year olds all wailing at the top of their lungs.
We can all learn from other parties we have attended. I hope that by sharing some of these stories has given you some pointers about what NOT to do. So now let\'s think about the best and most memorable party you ever attended. Write down what made it so special and then try and bring some of these elements into your own first birthday party planning.
