Hypnosis Facts - How You Can Use Hypnotherapy To Reach Your Goals
Posted on July 15, 2008
There are many myths floating around about hypnosis. Once you get past the myths and misconceptions, you will realize hypnotherapy is a fascinating and promising treatment option.
Long accepted as a legitimate form of treatment by the American Medical Association and American Psychological Association, scientific hypnosis has numerous therapeutic applications. Yet, despite its clinical value and its use in the counseling setting, hypnosis is still widely misunderstood, partly due to the way it has been portrayed in movies and the popular media, and because of its inauspicious beginnings, clouded in mesmerism.
Contrary to popular opinion, hypnosis is not a form of mind control, and a mentally sound hypnotized subject will not do something against his/her will.
Hypnosis is often perceived as a cure-all or panacea for our ills, another myth born out of superstition and misunderstanding. A few years ago, an unethical hypnotist in our area advertised that he could increase the size of a woman's breast through hypnosis. His ridiculous claims got him run out of business.
Modern Hypnotherapy
Ericksonian hypnotherapy is one of the forms of hypnosis most often utilized today. Developed by "Mr. Hypnosis," Milton Erickson, M.D., Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a useful tool in treating emotional and psychological conditions. Erickson pioneered conversational induction techniques and advocated hypnotherapy as a special form of therapeutic communication. Most hypnotherapists use at least some of Erickson's ideas and techniques.
As a therapeutic tool in a qualified person's hands, hypnotherapy has been useful in treating a wide range of complaints, from cigarette smoking to depression, and sexual problems to pain control. Over the past 25 years, I have used hypnotherapy to treat many disorders, such as social phobias and anxiety, and to improve athletic and artistic performance.
If You Want To Try Hypnosis
1. Ask your doctor or therapist if hypnosis is useful for the condition you want to improve.
2. Ask your therapist or doctor if he/she has specific training and experience in hypnotherapy. If not, ask for a referral.
3. Avoid obtaining treatment by unqualified people who lack professional training and appropriate licensure.
4. Interview the hypnotherapist and ask any questions you may have about the practitioner's approach to hypnosis and his/her techniques. If you do not like the answers, go elsewhere.
Hypnosis is an excellent and complex tool, but beware of those who may try to use it unprofessionally. And don't confuse entertainment hypnosis as a therapeutic devise. Hypnosis used in nightclubs is just that - a nightclub act.
If you are interested in learning self-hypnosis, be sure to learn all you can about it before trying it - and it is always best to do practice under the supervision of an experienced hypnotherapist.
Once you get past the myths and misconceptions, hypnosis is a valuable therapeutic tool useful in treating a large number of conditions.
