It Was A Hot Winters Night A True Cautionary Tale

Posted on August 9, 2008

He knew she loved hot curry.

The plan to meet her at his place that night over a superb spicy meal, a chilled bottle or two of white wine accompanied by a collection of her favourite tunes had been completed with a minimum of resistance.

She would come over at seven, while he\'d spend the afternoon frying, grinding and mixing the spices before cooking his two favourite curries slowly and tenderly in preparation for the nights scoffing.

Neither were under any illusions what this was all about. They had been flirting and getting on outrageously with each other for weeks, and tonight was a culmination of the fun they\'d been having together. A natural progression after becoming warm, trusting friends.

He chopped the chilli\'s carefully, noting how hot they were by chewing into a seed and spending the next 15 minutes holding his face under a tap of running cold water and gulping down mouthfuls of yoghurt. He finished chopping the chilli\'s with two ice cubes in his mouth and a whole new appreciation of people brought up on Indian food.

It was a cold night and the wood fire sparkled in the candle lit dining room, warming the aromatic air. He put on his favourite piece of mind swirling Indian music to start the evening off, she tapped the door with a gentle rap of her fingernails. He let her in.

The evening flowed beautifully. They ate and laughed the excellent meal, drank quality wine and cuddled warmly on the rug in front of a raging fire. The surround sound enveloped them and if it had been a scene from a fifties movie, the room and they would have faded out to be replaced by the two of them eating toast in the kitchen the next morning.

But this was real life, the scene didn\'t fade and life is far more interesting and unpredictable than that.

In the heat of what had already been an exceptionally hot night she suddenly stopped her cavorting and looked at him with wild panic in her eyes. Then she screamed, swore horribly and ran yelling out of the room, down the corridor and into the bathroom.

He lay there looking at the fire and wondering what had just happened. He called out a couple of times to ask if she was all right but only received loud incoherent abuse in return. Slowly, unsure what he\'d find, he got partially dressed and tip-toed after her and nudged the bathroom door open.

She was sitting naked in a cold bath, face red and eyes bulging. In his wildest dreams he couldn\'t work out what had just happened to make her behave like this. She\'d seemed just a nice, happy kind of girl and nothing like the lunatic before him.

Eventually she began to use real words he could understand. The awful truth fell on him.

\"The next time\" she growled between gritted teeth, \"The next time you chop chilli\'s do yourself and me a favour by washing your bloody fingers before putting them anywhere near me.\"
