1) Keep a household budget is probably the very fist smart step in seeing what money is available or left over at the end of the month, after paying off all your bills. This can show you ways to save money, for example, shopping for a lower car insurance rate, re-financing your mortgage, cutting back on dining out, etc. Oftentimes, people will move to a smaller, less expensive home, or rent an apartment for a few years, knowing full well that a good paying job is most likely available for them after graduation. Others brown bag their lunches, stop drinking the $4 lattes at Starbucks, and/or only buy essential items and not splurge on extraneous things. To keep in mind during your school years, most likely you will be without a salary, so cutting back and saving is important.
2) To pay for the loans that make up for the difference for what you CANNOT afford, it is strongly suggested to get as much information as you can from the financial aid departments of each school you are interested in applying to. Keep a financial aid folder for each school separate.
3) Do additional research on scholarships, grants, federal and private loans. determine the re-payment periods and the interest rates on these loans.
4) Before applying to school, as soon as you know you ARE going to school, work diligently on paying down your debt, especially your credit card debt. Also concentrate on reducing or eliminating any other outstanding, high-interest rate debts. Work on improving your credit rating ASAP, since your lenders will use the score to judge your loan application.
5) Work while you are in school. Granted, this is not the most appealing method but sometimes it is one of the only few you have. Unfortunately, the amount of time you will have to work while in school is minimal - not to mention the cost of fuel if your job is off-campus, along with other auto costs.
The last choice, number 5, is a big reason why more and more college and grad students try to earn money online. There are no transportation costs, you can work from home or from a dorm room, and it\'s enjoyable. College students are going this route when the first 4 options above don\'t quite work out for them.
