NLP - One Goal, One Passion - Your Excellence

Posted on June 13, 2008

Neuro-linguistic programming uses a process called modelling to alter patterns that you have formed from your conscious mind and which are embedded in your subconscious mind to become habitual behaviour.

Any habitual behaviour you exhibit, any knowledge that you have really internalized has moved from your conscious mind, your conscious awareness to the domain of subconscious mind.

Examples of habitual behaviour on a personal level are:

The process of cleaning your teeth

Having to think about which foot you put into your trousers when you first put them on

The initial procedure to drive your car

Planning which arm goes on top when you cross your arms

Habitual Behaviour - for the business world:

Learning to touch type, or just type

The spiel you say when answering the phone

Which hand you put out to shake hands

Standard doodling images when listening on the phone, or in a meeting

The process of booting up the computer

Examples of internalized knowledge on a personal level are:

Your address

Relatives'/friends' addresses

Your phone numbers

Other people's phone numbers

The names of people

Internalized knowledge - for the business world:

Negotiation tactics

Remembering facts and figures of the company

Knowledge of a client's business

Knowing how far to push/motivation staff and clients

Knowing when your ego, or pride, is getting in the way

What does the neuro imply?

Neuro relates to anything that has to do with your mind, how you use it and how it functions.

It also has to do with how you use your senses and how you use your body, your physiology.

Neuro deals with how you use these three areas, your mind, your senses and your physiology to make sense of your experiences.

It has been said that you have multi-millions of experiences attempting to enter your neurology via your five senses every second.

If these multi-million experiences were to enter your mind, you would go insane.

It is the role of your subconscious mind to filter out from entering your neurology anything it feels will not be beneficial to you in your present circumstance.

If you change your focus and start to look for new things, your neurology will adapt to that.

For example:

You have decided to buy a new car, and you have chosen the brand, Mercedes.

You now need to decide on which model. You've decided on the SLK 200.

As you drive around and when walking, you start to see the Mercedes, SLK 200, everywhere, the question is:

Did the SLK 200 suddenly appear, on the streets, as if from nowhere, or were they always there?

They were always there, but your attention was not on them until you decided to bring them into your focus.

That happens with everything in your life.

As something becomes a target for your attention, your 'neuro' kicks in to bring you more of that.

Therefore, don't focus on what you don't want, focus on what you want.

Example:

Saying what you don't want: "I hope I don't blow this meeting like I did the last one."

Instead say: "I'm well-prepared for this meeting, and I can feel the successful outcome."

Now to linguistic, what does this word refer to?

Linguistic has to do with the language, that is, words and phrases you use either in your internal chatter and when you think, or in the language you use when conversing with other people.

Your quality of life is largely dependent upon the language you use, because it's largely through your language that you program your neurology.

Linguistic also includes the use of metaphors, the art of precision questioning and of the ecological use of hypnotic language

The words and phrases you use affects your neurology and thus affects your physiology.

Your language is your lifeline.

Learning to 'hear' yourself objectively leads to you mastering the language you use.

All your interactions are dependent on your ability to communicate in a concise, effective, and clear manner, toward-motivated language.

Toward-motivated language means that you are expressing what you want, and not, what you don't want.

Your ability to establish rapport is based on your communication style and your ability to pace and lead others to an appreciation of your point of view; the message that you are trying to get across.

Language is an important tool in business, being the currency of your rapport-building skills as you communicate and trade.

You can either use language to expand you or you can use it to limit yourself.

An important point to remember is also that it's not just what you say, but how you say it.

A differentiating feature of human beings from other living entities is that emotion plays a major role in our life.

To influence others, you need to engage the hearts and minds of your listeners.

Think of great speeches such as those of Martin Luther King Jnr, Mahatma Ghandi, Mark Antony, Mother Theresa; these people swayed their audience by appealing to their emotions.

Pepper your language with words that call your listener to imagine and see an outcome, to hear the enthusiasm of team members, to feel how good it will be to present the successful campaign, and to list the benefits of this success.

Effective communication means using specific and clear language.

Often in the business world, people engage in neutral and abstract language. This may feel temporarily 'safe', but it achieves limited results.

Politicians indulge in abstractions as these don't alienate voters, but you often come away from a politician's speech, asking yourself: What did that person really say?

Inspirational speakers, motivators, effective leaders are all aware of the important of the linguistic component of their job.

You can inspire, motivate and delight your audience by being aware of the language your use.

The last component is programming.

Everything you do has a strategy attached to it.

If you understand your strategies, you can identify the ones that still serve you well and the ones which have become redundant to your empowering personal evolution.

Understanding your behavioural strategies expands your choices, and one of the presuppositions of NLP is: All procedures are designed to increase choice.

Whatever strategies you have chosen that no longer serve your best interests, you can replace with strategies that will take you closer to your dreams about yourself and your life.

To increase your repertoire of strategies, NLP applies the concept that if someone can do it, anyone can do it.

This philosophy is the basis of modelling, doing what people do who are brilliant in their field, and applying the strategies of how they do it.

In short, you can replicate excellence.

Modelling allows us to be self-reliant in the way we learn, develop, change, and manage ourselves in this ever-changing world.

The programming of NLP allows you to expand and be more of the wonderful person who is you.

In other words, NLP techniques are a toolkit whereby the person you are can expand.

Good behaviour will expand, as will questionable behaviour.

We have free will.

In a business context this means learning what each individual has to offer.

Modelling opens up a new world of how we recognize potential to be used for the good of all.

Programming means altering the conditionings we have adopted from our various developmental periods, viz Imprint Period (ages 0-7), Modelling Period (7-14), Socialization Period (14-21), Business Persona (21-35).
