What Is Pinging?
Posted on October 14, 2008
Exactly what is pinging? We have all heard this term used when using blogs for our online business and internet marketing ventures, but what is it really?
Very simply, to \"ping\" someone or something means to verify, or to check and see if another party is online. A good example would be when you call someone on the telephone and the phone starts ringing. This means there is an active phone number at the other end. Pinging is the same concept.
For the sake of blogging, and setting up pinging services, it works the same. When you use wordpress blogging software, you can set up the blog to automatically ping any number of places you want it to.
To set this up, you would just go to:
Login to Admin
\r Go to Optionsn
\r Go to Writing
\r Go to the bottom of the page where it says Update Servicesn
\r Enter in the pinging services
Now, every time you blog something, and publish it, it will ping these other services. Remember from the definition above, you are now letting these services know you have information available for them. They will send out their robots/spiders and gather your new information.
Without the ping, you would need to manually let all of these places know your blog is updated. But, by using the \"ping command\", which is nothing new, your blog is using this technology to get your information out there.
This also saves the pinging places time from always going out and looking for new links and information. I guess, in that way, it is different than search engines that are always on the hunt for new information. Pinging places do not work like that. They only come out to play if you ask them to.
That, my friend, is the basic answer to the question: What is pinging? It is an old technology, but being used in a new and updated manner. And thankfully so! This saves both you and me a ton of work, and automates the process for all of us.
